The sound of an orc name
Orc names work by contrast with elves. Where elvish names flow, orc names stop: hard g, k and r, the rough sh and z, short vowels a, u and o, and syllables that end in a consonant. Most are one or two syllables, easy to bark across a battle.
| Name | What makes it work |
|---|---|
| Shagra Stonetusk | A rough sh opening and a clan name of toughness. |
| Bolrak Ironjaw | Two closed syllables ending in a hard k. |
| Muzog the Unburied | A byname in place of a clan, earned by surviving. |
| Gorra of the Bone Pits | Feminine -ra on a guttural stem; a clan named for a place. |
Goblins are not small orcs
Goblin names here use bright front vowels (i, e) and clipped endings (-ik, -it, -ix): Tikix, Gribix, Krikwick. They sound quick, small and a little comic, and their bynames are grubby rather than grand (Mudnose, Rustgrin).
Writing orcs as people
Many recent books give orcs culture, families and grief, not just war cries. The names can help. Clan bynames say what a family values (Ironjaw, Stonetusk); deed names say what a person survived (the Unburied, Twice-Scarred). Give your orc characters a reason for their names and readers will see a people instead of a horde.
- Keep them sayable. Three consonants in a row look fierce and read badly. The generator limits clusters for that reason.
- Avoid the famous warchiefs. Well known orcs from books and games are filtered out; search anything you keep.
Questions writers ask
Are these orc names from a particular game?

Can I get female orc names?
Yes. Choose Feminine. Feminine names use endings such as -ga, -ra and -sha on the same guttural stems.
What is the difference between orc and goblin names?
Orc names are heavy and guttural with dark vowels; goblin names are short and sharp with bright vowels and clipped endings, and their bynames are comic.
Can I turn off the clan names?
Yes. Untick Include a clan name.
Keep your names where the story is
In Feldar each character, place and faction can be a card on the Canvas, linked to the others and kept beside the pages you are writing. When Feldar helps you write, it draws on those cards, so its suggestions use the names you chose.
