    How dragon names sound

Dragons in fiction are old, so their names sound old: three or four syllables, rolling r and th, dark vowels, endings that hold (-orath, -yrion, -ithra). A long name also tells the reader that the creature is patient. Nobody gives a four-syllable name to something that lives forty years.

Dragons rarely have family names. In myth and fiction they carry a title instead, given by the people who survived them: a deed (Bane of Three Kings), a habit (the Gold-Hoarder) or a look (the Iron-Scaled).

    NameWhat makes it work
Vesaxa the Cinder CrownFeminine -axa ending; a title that suggests rule.
Cyragar the Iron-ScaledHard g and r; a title from appearance.
Auriorath ShadowcoilFour syllables; a compound title in place of a byname.
Sorix the BoldA young dragon: two syllables, easy to shout.
Nimsa of the Kitchen HearthA companion dragon named by the people who keep her.

    Naming dragons in a story

    • True names and common names. Many stories give dragons a secret true name with power over them, and a title everyone else uses. The long names here suit the first, the titles the second.
    • Names given by riders. A bonded dragon is often named by a person, so its name sounds like that person's language rather than draconic. Use the young dragon style, or a real name from the character name generator.
    • Steer clear of famous dragons. Well known dragons from books, films and games are filtered out. Search any name you keep.

    Questions writers ask

Should a dragon have a surname?

Usually not. Dragons in myth and fiction carry titles earned by deeds, which is what Include a title adds. Turn it off for a bare name.

    Are there female dragon names?

Yes. Choose Feminine for endings such as -ithra, -ysse and -axa. Many writers leave dragons ungendered; Any mixes both.

What names suit a pet or companion dragon?

Choose Young or companion dragon. Those names are one or two syllables, warm and easy to call, often borrowed from fire, smoke and stone.

    Will I get a famous dragon's name?

The generator skips the best known dragons from books, films and games, but search any name before you publish it.

Keep your names where the story is

In Feldar each character, place and faction can be a card on the Canvas, linked to the others and kept beside the pages you are writing. When Feldar helps you write, it draws on those cards, so its suggestions use the names you chose.
