How dwarf names work
Dwarf names in fantasy draw on the sound of Old Norse and Old English: short words, closed syllables that end in a consonant, and the hard stops b, d, g and k. Dark vowels (a, o, u) sound deeper than bright ones (e, i). Most dwarf names here are two syllables, a start like Bor, Dur or Thar and an ending like -in, -ur or -grim.
| Name | What makes it work |
|---|---|
| Belga Coppermaker | Two closed syllables; the clan name is a craft. |
| Gorra Blackaxe | A doubled r and a dark vowel give weight. |
| Thorgan Coalfist | A strong opening consonant cluster and a short ending. |
| Norgrid Graniteforge | The feminine -grid ending, as in Norse names. |
| Hargan Flintvein | A clan name from the mine as well as the forge. |
Women's names
Many books leave dwarf women nameless or give them men's names. Here feminine names use their own endings (-dis, -hild, -grid, -ra, -una) on the same heavy stems, so they sound like the same people without sounding soft.
Clan names
The clan names join a material (iron, granite, coal, copper) to a body part, tool or deed (brow, fist, hammer, delver). That mirrors how real bynames grew from what a family was known for. Turn them off to get given names only.
Using dwarf names well
- Rhyming families. Real families often reuse a sound across siblings. Pick one stem and vary the ending for brothers and sisters (Dagur, Dagrin, Dagra).
- Formal and everyday names. A clan name in full ("Hargan son of Bor, of the Flintvein clan") suits ceremony; in a tavern he is just Hargan.
- Stay clear of the famous company. The generator skips the dwarves of the best known quest story, but close variants still echo it. Search before you keep one.
Questions writers ask
Are dwarf names copied from Tolkien?
No. Tolkien took many dwarf names from the Old Norse poem Voluspa; these are built from original syllables with the same Norse feel, and well known dwarves from his books are filtered out.
Do dwarf women have different names?
In this generator, yes: feminine names use endings such as -dis, -hild and -grid on the same heavy stems. Choose Feminine to see only those.
Can I turn off the clan name?
Yes. Untick Include a clan name to get given names on their own.
Can I use these for a tabletop character?
Yes. Share a set with your group with Copy a link to these names; everyone sees the same list.
Keep your names where the story is
In Feldar each character, place and faction can be a card on the Canvas, linked to the others and kept beside the pages you are writing. When Feldar helps you write, it draws on those cards, so its suggestions use the names you chose.
