How they differ in use.

Story memory

Sudowrite can fill in its Story Bible for you. Novelcrafter's Codex you build. Feldar links cards on a Canvas.

The AI

Sudowrite and Feldar include the models in the plan. Novelcrafter connects to the provider you choose and pay.

Drafting

Sudowrite drafts from Scenes, Novelcrafter from Scene Beats. Feldar drafts a page from its scene outline.

What a year costs.

Twelve months billed monthly, so all three compare the same way. Novelcrafter shows two months off for yearly billing, but no yearly totals.

Billed yearly, Sudowrite is $120 or $264 and Feldar $180 or $400. Novelcrafter's help center prices one 400-word passage at about $0.02 on Claude 3.5 Sonnet and $0.10 on Claude Opus, at November 2024 rates. Credits in Sudowrite and Feldar are each company's own unit.

Choosing between them.

All three let you try before you pay, so test them with a real chapter.

  1. Step 1

Decide whether you want the AI to write, or to help you write.

  2. Step 2

In Novelcrafter, connect OpenRouter or OpenAI before you start.

  3. Step 3

Write the same chapter in each, on their trials and Feldar's free plan.

  4. Step 4

Add up what a heavy month would cost, AI included.

  5. Step 5

Move the manuscript as a .docx; rebuild the story memory by hand.

Questions

Is Sudowrite or Novelcrafter better for writing a novel?

It depends on how you want to work. Sudowrite is better if you want the AI to generate drafts with little setup. Novelcrafter is better if you want to organize a complex book or series and control the AI yourself. Both have a free trial with no card, so the fairest test is the same chapter in each.

Is Novelcrafter cheaper than Sudowrite?

The subscription is: $4 to $20 a month against Sudowrite's $10 to $59. But Novelcrafter's plans include no AI usage, so you also pay your AI provider. For light use with inexpensive models that bill is small; for heavy drafting with top models it can pass Sudowrite's price.

Can I use my ChatGPT or Claude subscription in Novelcrafter?

No. Novelcrafter's help center says flat-rate subscriptions such as ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro can't be used. You connect an API key, through OpenRouter or OpenAI, or run a local model.

Do any of these apps train AI on my book?

Sudowrite, Novelcrafter and Feldar all say they do not. With Novelcrafter your text also goes to the AI provider you connect, under that provider's terms.

Can I move my book from one to another?

The manuscript, yes: all three export .docx, and Feldar imports it. The story memory does not travel. A Story Bible, a Codex or a Canvas has to be rebuilt in the new app.
