Feldar vs Sudowrite
Pick Sudowrite if you want the AI to generate a lot of prose for you, on your phone as well as your computer, with models tuned for fiction. Pick Feldar if you mostly write the words yourself and want planning, a story world and revision help in one place, with every AI change shown before it stays.
The short answer
- Sudowrite is built to generate fiction. Its Story Bible walks you from a Braindump to a synopsis, outline, scenes and drafted chapters. It has its own fiction models, Muse and Ballad, and apps for iPhone and Android.
- Feldar is built around your manuscript. You plan chapters as scenes, keep the world on a Canvas, and ask for help when you want it. New AI text arrives in blue or in a card and stays only if you accept it.
- Price: Sudowrite starts at $10 a month billed yearly or $19 billed monthly. Feldar has a free plan, then $20 a month or $180 a year.
- Neither company trains AI models on your writing.

Planning a book
Sudowrite's Story Bible is a guided path. You start with a Braindump of loose ideas, then fill in Genre and Style. From there Sudowrite can generate a Synopsis, then Characters and Worldbuilding, then an Outline, then Scenes for each chapter. Each step feeds the next, and you can write or rewrite any field by hand. Sudowrite's help center describes it as both a way to stay organized and a source of truth that keeps the AI on track. (Older guides call it Story Engine; that is the legacy name.)
Sudowrite also has a Canvas: a whiteboard for cards, text and outlines, with templates for the Hero's Journey, Hollywood Beats, the Story Circle and a Romance Outline. Its Series Support lets several books share Story Bible elements.
Feldar plans at the level of the chapter. Every page has an Outline: describe what happens next, choose how many scenes you want, and Generate scenes lays them out with a title and a short description each. Most writers then cut and rewrite them. Nothing is drafted until you ask.
The world lives on Feldar's Canvas, a board of cards for characters, locations, plot beats, items, factions and notes. You connect cards with labelled links such as Part of, Causes or Opposes, and Branch from a card to start a related one. Feldar draws on those cards when it writes or answers questions, so suggestions use the names and history you have set down. More about the Canvas.
The difference in practice: Sudowrite's Story Bible is one long form for the whole book that the AI follows from top to bottom. Feldar's plan sits on each chapter, and the world sits on a board you arrange yourself.
Drafting with AI
Sudowrite gives you several ways to make new prose. Write continues from where you are. Expand turns a short passage or outline into a longer one. Describe suggests descriptive detail. Brainstorm gives you lists of ideas. Draft writes chapter prose from the Scenes in your Story Bible, using your Style, Genre, Characters and Worldbuilding. You can choose a Prose Mode, one of Sudowrite's curated sets of models for fiction, which changes the voice of what comes back.
Feldar has fewer generation tools and puts more weight on review. At the end of a paragraph, Continue from here writes the next lines in blue. You choose Accept, Revise (shorter, longer, more interiority, more physical detail and so on) or Dismiss. Draft Page writes a whole page from its scenes, at a word count you set, if you want a first pass to work against. Voice & Style uses a sample of your prose, and as the book grows Feldar follows the project's own prose instead.
If generating chapters is the main thing you want from an AI tool, Sudowrite has more ways to do it. If you want the AI to stay out of the way until you stall, Feldar is closer to that.
Revision and feedback
For line work, Sudowrite has Rewrite, Quick Edit and a Selection Menu for highlighted text. On Professional and Max, its Feedback tool reads your work and leaves comments in the margin like an editor, with your Story Bible in view. Sudowrite can also publish a share link to a chapter or a whole manuscript, and each reader leaves comments on their own clean copy.
In Feldar, select a passage and choose Polish, Deepen or Enhance, or type an instruction like "Slow this down." The rewrite appears in a card with the changed words marked, and you Apply it or keep your original. Checks reads the page for grammar and spelling, clarity, repetition and word choice, dialogue transitions and point of view, and marks each issue with a suggested fix.
For a reader's view, Lens in Chat gives you six personas: Critic, Cheerleader, Poet, Editor, Plotter and Reader. Reader reactions takes an audience you choose, such as fantasy readers or a book club, and marks the moments that landed, or didn't, in your margin. Feldar does not let you share a project with other people, so for human beta readers you would export a file.
Feldar also keeps a private Writing record of which words you typed and which came through Feldar's tools, in case a publisher, contest or school asks how the book was written. Why we built it.
When Sudowrite is the better choice
- You want to generate whole chapters. The Story Bible to Draft path is designed for it, and it is more complete than Feldar's.
- You write on your phone. Sudowrite has apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. Feldar has no mobile app.
- You want models trained for fiction. Sudowrite says Muse was trained on a curated dataset with the authors' informed consent. Feldar uses general models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
- You want beta readers in the same app. Share links and per-reader comments are built in. Feldar has no sharing.
- You pay yearly and write a lot. At $10 a month billed yearly, Hobby & Student is cheaper than Feldar's Core plan billed yearly ($15 a month).
- You like a big community. Sudowrite runs a Discord and free live classes.
When Feldar is the better choice
- You write the prose yourself. Feldar is built for writing in your own words, with help that waits until you ask and shows every change before it stays.
- You plan chapter by chapter. A scene Outline on each page is lighter than filling in a book-wide Story Bible first.
- You think in a board. The Canvas keeps characters, places, factions and plot beats as linked cards you can see at once.
- You want revision passes. Checks and the rewrite card suit a second and third draft.
- You want to start free. Feldar's Starter plan costs nothing and needs no card. Sudowrite has a free trial, then a paid plan.
- You want a record of your process. The Writing record is private evidence of how much you wrote by hand.
- You prefer a desktop app. Feldar has a Mac app as well as the web app.
What a year costs
Sudowrite's pricing page opens on yearly billing, so the headline prices ($10, $22, $44) are monthly equivalents of a yearly payment. Billed month to month, the same plans are $19, $29 and $59. Here is a full year either way.
| Plan | Billed monthly, 12 months | Billed yearly | Credits a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sudowrite Hobby & Student | $228 | $120 | 225,000 |
| Sudowrite Professional | $348 | $264 | 1,000,000 |
| Sudowrite Max | $708 | $528 | 2,000,000, rolling over |
| Feldar Starter | $0 | $0 | 500 once |
| Feldar Core | $240 | $180 | 20,000 |
| Feldar Pro | $480 | $400 | 45,000 |
Don't compare the credit columns with each other. Each company's credit is its own unit, and neither of us publishes a single cost per novel. Feldar does not publish per-action credit costs. Sudowrite's help center has a page on how many credits its features use.
Two details matter if you run out. On Sudowrite, unused credits roll over only on Max (for up to 12 months), and credits you buy never expire. On Feldar, subscription credits reset each month, and top-ups (5,000 credits for $5, up to 15,000 for $15) last 12 months. If you run out on Feldar, your writing stays available; only the AI features pause.
Also check the Professional credit figure before you buy: on November 5 the pricing page showed both 1,000,000 and 450,000 for that plan, while the help center lists 1,000,000.
Moving from Sudowrite to Feldar
- In Sudowrite, export your project as one merged .docx file.
- In Feldar, choose Import manuscript in your Library and pick the .docx. Files can be up to 20 MB.
- Your Story Bible does not come with the export. Copy the Characters and Worldbuilding you want to keep onto the Canvas as cards. You can paste notes into Chat and ask it to propose cards, which you accept or reject.
- Paste at least 600 words of your own prose into Voice & Style, so suggestions start from your rhythm.
- For the chapters you haven't written yet, set up an Outline of scenes on each page.
If you cancel Sudowrite, its pricing FAQ says your projects stay accessible; only the AI features need a paid plan. So there is no rush to move everything on day one.
Questions
Is there a free alternative to Sudowrite?
Feldar's Starter plan is free, with 500 credits for AI features and no credit card. It uses GPT-6 Luna. Writing, planning and organizing never use credits, so you can write a whole book on it and use AI sparingly. Sudowrite itself has a free trial but no free plan.
How much does Sudowrite cost?
As of November 5, 2026: Hobby & Student is $10 a month billed yearly or $19 billed monthly; Professional is $22 or $29; Max is $44 or $59. The pricing page shows yearly billing first, so check which one you are choosing at checkout.
Do Sudowrite or Feldar train AI on my writing?
Both say no. Sudowrite's pricing FAQ says it does not use your writing to train Sudowrite or OpenAI's models. Feldar does not use your writing to train AI models, and you own what you write.
Can I bring my Sudowrite novel into Feldar?
Yes, the manuscript. Export it from Sudowrite as a .docx file and import it into Feldar. The Story Bible does not come along, so you rebuild the characters and places you need as Canvas cards.
Can I use Feldar on my phone like Sudowrite?
No. Feldar has no iPhone or Android app. It runs in the browser at feldar.com and as a Mac app. If you write on your phone, Sudowrite's mobile apps are a real advantage.
Which one sounds more like me?
Both try. Sudowrite has a Style field and Match My Style. Feldar's Voice & Style takes a sample of 600 words or more and later follows the prose of the project itself. The best test is the same scene in both apps during Sudowrite's trial and on Feldar's free plan.
