#### Where witch names come from

The witches of folk tale and history were ordinary village women and men, so the most convincing witch names are real ones that have fallen out of use: Agatha, Hester, Dorcas, Temperance, Ezekiel. Puritan families in seventeenth-century England and New England gave children virtue names such as Prudence and Temperance, which gives those names a particular weight in witch stories set in that world.

The surnames are invented, built from the plants and places witches are tied to in folklore: hemlock, nettle, wych (as in wych elm), moor, fen and hollow.

#### Writing witches with care

- Modern witches have modern names. A witch in a contemporary story is more likely a Megan than a Morwenna, and may take a craft name later. Use the [character name generator](https://feldar.com/tools/character-name-generator) for the name on her bank card.
- Remember the real trials. Thousands of people were executed as witches in early modern Europe and colonial America. If your story draws on that history, real victims' names belong to them; the generator's surnames are invented for that reason.
- Living practice. Wicca and other modern pagan traditions are living religions. Treat their terms and names with the respect you would give any faith.
- Avoid famous witches. Several best-selling series have well known witch characters; search any name you keep.

#### Questions writers ask

Are the given names real?

Yes. They are old English and European given names, many from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. The surnames are invented.

Can I get male witch names?

Yes. Choose Masculine. In historical witch trials men were accused too, and folklore has its share of cunning men and warlocks.

What should I call a coven?

Covens in fiction are usually named for a place, a symbol or a craft. Choose Coven names in the menu for names such as The Coven of the Seventh Well.

Are these names free to use?

Yes. Names are not protected by copyright in the US, and you don't need anyone's permission to use them.

#### Keep your names where the story is

In Feldar each character, place and faction can be a card on the [Canvas](https://feldar.com/features/canvas), linked to the others and kept beside the pages you are writing. When Feldar helps you write, it draws on those cards, so its suggestions use the names you chose.
