Villain names lean on the harsh side: x, z, v and k, the hiss of s, dark vowels, and endings that close like a door (-ax, -oth) or trail away like smoke (-yra, -issa). The Glass SurgeonA codename: an image and a profession that should not meet. Professor BlightA title borrowed from respectable life, made sinister. #### Naming an antagonist - Who gave the name? A villain named at birth has an ordinary name; the byname comes later, from victims or legend. A villain who renamed themselves tells you about their vanity. Decide which. - Ordinary can be scarier. In thrillers and literary fiction the most frightening antagonists often have plain names. If the reveal matters, a name like Malakar gives the game away on page one. Save the harsh byname for the turn. - Avoid famous codenames. Comic villains are trademarked as characters. The generator skips the best known, but search any codename you keep. #### Questions writers ask How do I name a villain without it sounding cheesy? Use the harsh sounds sparingly and let the byname carry the menace, or give the villain a plain name and let their actions do the work. A name that announces evil works for fairy tales and comedy; most other fiction is better served by restraint. What makes a good supervillain codename? An image plus a twist: something familiar joined to something wrong (the Glass Surgeon), or a respectable title made sinister (Professor Blight). Short codenames are easier for other characters to say in dialogue. Can I get female villain names? Yes. Choose Feminine. Supervillain codenames also include titles such as Madame when you do. Can I use these names commercially? Names themselves aren't protected by copyright in the US, but well known comic characters are protected as trademarks.
