Where elvish names flow, orc names stop: hard g, k and r, the rough sh and z, short vowels a, u and o, and syllables that end in a consonant. They sound quick, small and a little comic, and their bynames are grubby rather than grand (Mudnose, Rustgrin). #### Writing orcs as people Many recent books give orcs culture, families and grief, not just war cries. The names can help. Clan bynames say what a family values (Ironjaw, Stonetusk); deed names say what a person survived (the Unburied, Twice-Scarred). Give your orc characters a reason for their names and readers will see a people instead of a horde. - Keep them sayable. Three consonants in a row look fierce and read badly. The generator limits clusters for that reason. - Avoid the famous warchiefs.
