#### How real pantheons name their gods

Gods in real religions almost never have just one name. They are called by what they rule (a god of the sea), by an epithet (grey-eyed, far-shooting), by a title (Allfather, Queen of Heaven) and often by many names at once, each used in a different place or rite. Writers can borrow that structure without borrowing the gods: it makes an invented religion feel worshipped rather than listed.

NameWhat makes it work

Tahyr, god of vengeanceA short name and a domain: the shape of a myth summary.

Eshira, the Grey MotherA title in place of a domain: how worshippers speak.

Taheth the LaughingAn epithet that hints at a story.

The Hunger in the StaticAn old power known only by what it is.

Othash, the Mouth in the Deep WellsA name too strange to say, with a title for those who must.

#### Building a pantheon

- Start with what the people fear and need. A fishing people needs a god of the sea and one of storms; a mountain people, gods of stone and winter. Domains first, names second.
- One language, many names. Give the gods names that sound like their worshippers' language, then add titles and epithets in the common tongue.
- Leave real gods to their faiths. Names from living religions belong to the people who pray to them. The generator skips well known real deity names; check any name you keep.
- Keep cosmic horror unspeakable. The old powers work best half-named. Let characters avoid the name and use the title.

#### Questions writers ask

Can I use these god names in a published book?

Yes. The names are invented, and names are not protected by copyright in the US. Avoid names of deities from living religions, which the generator filters out.

How many gods should a fantasy pantheon have?

As many as the story needs. Most readers can follow five to seven with distinct domains; more works if only a few appear on the page.

Can I get only goddesses?

Yes. Choose Feminine for goddesses or Masculine for gods. Any mixes both.

What are the old powers for?

Cosmic horror and dark fantasy, where the threat is older than any pantheon. They come with titles such as the Thing That Waits rather than a domain.

#### Keep your names where the story is

In Feldar each character, place and faction can be a card on the [Canvas](https://feldar.com/features/canvas), linked to the others and kept beside the pages you are writing. When Feldar helps you write, it draws on those cards, so its suggestions use the names you chose.
