Victorian fairies are tiny, bright and kind, and their names sound like it: light consonants (l, s, f, w), bright vowels, two syllables, family names from flowers and dew. The older folklore of Britain and Ireland tells of the Good Folk, beautiful and dangerous, divided into the Seelie (blessed) and Unseelie (unblessed) courts in Scottish tradition. Stories often give the fae a public name and a hidden one; generate both and decide which the reader learns. - Courtesy names. People in folk tales avoided naming the fae directly and called them the Good Folk or the Gentry. Your human characters might do the same. - Avoid the stage fairies. Shakespeare's and Barrie's fairy names are well known; the generator skips them. #### Questions writers ask What is the difference between Seelie and Unseelie? In Scottish folklore the Seelie court is the blessed one, more inclined to help humans, and the Unseelie court the unblessed one, inclined to harm. Many modern fantasy books build on the idea. Can I get boy fairy names? Yes. Choose Masculine. Endings such as -wick, -lin and -rin give lighter masculine names. Can I use these for a children's story? Yes.
