#### What makes a name sound elvish

Readers have learned to hear elves in a handful of sounds. Liquids (l, r), nasals (n, m), the soft th and v, and open vowels give names that seem to flow without a hard stop. Long names of three or four syllables suggest a long life and an old language. Hard k, g and z, and short closed syllables, belong to other peoples.

These names are built from original syllables. They borrow the feel of the elvish tradition, not any author's invented language, so they won't read as copies of a famous book.

##### Three kinds of elf

NameWhat makes it work

Loriel CelondilHigh elf: open syllables, a feminine -iel ending, a long family name.

Aradir EvedorHigh elf: masculine -dir and -dor endings, no hard stops.

Haleth AlderwhisperWood elf: a shorter given name and an English nature compound.

Bryne AshwalkerWood elf: earthier consonants (b, r), a family name that says where they live.

Drira VaeraeDark elf: elvish shape, colder sounds; the family name is a noble house.

Drisarin XorvashDark elf: z, x and sh give the edge high elves lack.

##### Endings and gender

In this generator feminine names lean toward -iel, -wen, -ith and -ia, and masculine names toward -ion, -dir, -or and -las. Some endings (-el, -ar, -in) are shared. If your elves don't mark gender in names at all, set the generator to Any and pick by sound alone.

#### Using elf names in a story

- Give elves a short use-name. A four-syllable name is lovely once and tiring on every page. Let friends shorten it, and use the full name in formal scenes and dialogue with strangers.
- Let family names do work. A wood elf called Ashwalker tells the reader where she comes from; a dark elf house name tells them she has rank. Choose a pattern and keep it for the whole people.
- Vary first letters. Elvish names cluster around Ae-, El- and Th-. Check your cast list so no two main elves share an opening.
- Avoid the famous ones. The generator skips well known elves from existing books and games, but always search a name before you commit to it.

#### Questions writers ask

Are these names taken from Tolkien's Elvish languages?

No. They are built from original syllables and sound rules chosen to give the same soft, flowing feel. No words are copied from Sindarin, Quenya or any other invented language.

What is the difference between high elf and wood elf names?

High elf names are longer and more flowing, with long syllabic family names. Wood elf names are shorter and earthier, and their family names are English nature compounds such as Alderwhisper or Thornroot.

Can I use these for a Dungeons and Dragons character?

Yes. Tabletop elves often have a given name and a family name, and many players translate the family name into the common tongue, which is what the wood elf compounds do.

Can I get only female or only male elf names?

Yes. Choose Feminine or Masculine. Any mixes both, and some endings are shared by all elves.

#### Keep your names where the story is

In Feldar each character, place and faction can be a card on the [Canvas](https://feldar.com/features/canvas), linked to the others and kept beside the pages you are writing. When Feldar helps you write, it draws on those cards, so its suggestions use the names you chose.
